Biography

Soe W. Myint spent four years at the United Nations Environment Program - Environment Assessment Program for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP - EAP/AP) as a Research Specialist. Prior to joining the School of Geographical Sciences at Arizona State University, he was an assistant professor (tenure-track) in the Department of Geography at University of Oklahoma for four years.

He has received 6 best paper awards and 1 best poster award at professional meetings before and after his PhD study with regards to geospatial statistical analysis (i.e., Variogram, fractal, lacunarity), spatial autocorrelation (Moran’s I, Geary’s C, Getis index), and wavelet-based algorithms that he developed, examined, and employed to answer science and research questions.

In addition to the AAG’s best paper awards, he received the AAG - Otis Paul Starkey Dissertation Research Award from AAG in 2001. Moreover, he has received the RSSG Outstanding Achievement Award of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) - Remote Sensing Specialty Group (RSSG), 2016 AAG Annual Meeting, San Francisco. He has received all three awards that are currently available at the AAG-RSSG: (1) Best Student Paper Award; (2) Early Career Scholars in Remote Sensing; and (3) RSSG Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2007. He also received an Asian Institute of Technology Alumni Association (AITAA) Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic and Research Excellence, Asian Institute of Technology.

He also received three Scholar awards: (1) USGS Scholar Award, First International Conference on GIScience, 2000, Savannah, GA, USA; (2) Intergraph Young Scholar Award (UCGIS), 2002 UCGIS Summer Assembly, University of Georgia, Athens, and (3) CPGIS Scholar Award, 2005, selected by the Chinese Professionals in Geographic Information Science Abroad (CPGIS) to give lectures and research presentations at Jiangxi Normal University, Nanchang University, and Hubei University as part of the CPGIS Young Scholar Summit.

He has been President, Vice President, Membership Chair, and Director of the the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) - Southwest US Region. He has also served as Chair, Vice Chair, and Director of Remote Sensing Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) and is Faculty Sponsor of the ASU student chapter of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS).

He has been serving as Associate Editor of Remote Sensing journal, Subject Editor of Ecosystem Health and Sustainability, Editorial Advisory Board Member of the International Journal of Remote Sensing (formerly Associate Editor, IJRS), and Editorial Board Member of GIScience and Remote Sensing journal.
