Research Interests
Aaron Arizmendi, along with his director Dr. Gil-Osle, is developing a promising academic profile where Asia, America, and Europe are integrated from the perspective of the consumption and representations of animals in the 16th and 17th centuries. His work with key writings of the Age of Explorations—Don Quijote (1605, and 1615), Pigafetta’s report on the first circumnavigation (early 1520s), the Manila Boxer Codex (1590s), Cabeza de Vaca’s Shipwrecks (1537), among others—constantly reminds us about the 21st century global meat industry moral, conceptual, and ecological consequences. For Arizmendi, today’s dystopian realities of the meat industry and diet are founded in the expanding global vision and depiction of animals created in the 16th and 17th century reports.
