John J. Horan received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University. He came to Arizona State University as Director of the Counseling Psychology Program after earlier career experiences that included Jr. High Math Teacher, Juvenile Court Psychologist, and Professor at Penn State. John is a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. He was a Vice President of the American Educational Research Association and received three AERA awards for outstanding research. John is directing the construction of the Virtual Counseling Center at ASU on funds primarily from the National Science Foundation. As a board member of the Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy, John created its on-line edition in 1998, and has served on the editorial boards or been a consulting reviewer for more than 20 other journals. John says he built his career on the experimental method. The first decade was spent randomly assigning participants to experimental and control treatments in order to determine if the counseling interventions had a beneficial impact. The second decade focused on the experimental construct validity of those effects. For example, did the treatments produce changes on measures of high theoretical relevance while simultaneously failing to effect changes on measures of low theoretical relevance? Now it is time to achieve a broad impact. For the past decade John has focused on developing empirically-supported counseling interventions to run on the Internet. John reports a love of pizza and a loathing of exercise. He jogs several 5-Ks each week to bring his overactive fork under control and to keep his silhouette from swelling to the size of a psychologist's ego. Running also gives him a chance to support a variety of local charities. If John has your email address, count on being hit up for a donation this year.
