Eileen Seo joined the faculty at ASU in 2021 as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy and the Biodesign Center for Sustainable Macromolecular Materials and Manufacturing. Her research is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive, dynamic soft and composite materials using the tools of polymer chemistry, additive manufacturing and nanotechnology. She obtained a B.S. in Chemical Biology at UC Berkeley (2011) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Northwestern University working with Prof. Chad Mirkin (2018). Then, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Santa Barbara in the Materials Department with Prof. Craig Hawker.

Research Group: 

Research in the E.Seo group focuses on the development of new synthetic methods to control polymer architecture, composition, and function and design hierarchical and multifunctional materials. We are committed to developing strategies that address challenges in energy, environment, and human health at the interface of polymer chemistry, additive manufacturing, and nanotechnology. Under this general theme, three different areas of research will be pursued: 1) building stimuli-responsive nanocomposites, where nanoparticles functionalized with a dense shell of ligands direct the assembly of polymer networks, 2) engineering recyclable and reprocessable materials via living additive manufacturing, and 3) developing new methods to incorporate ordered nanostructures in polymer matrices to access high performance, hierarchical structures with programmed strain and deformation behavior.
