Soyoung Seo

S. Eileen Seo joined the faculty at ASU in 2021 as an assistant professor of chemical engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy (SEMTE) and the Biodesign Center for Sustainable Macromolecular Materials and Manufacturing. She is also a graduate faculty of materials science and engineering in SEMTE and the School of Molecular Sciences. Her research is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive, dynamic soft and composite materials using the tools of polymer chemistry, additive manufacturing and nanotechnology. She obtained a B.S. in Chemical Biology at UC Berkeley (2011) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Northwestern University working with Prof. Chad Mirkin (2018). Then, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Santa Barbara in the Materials Department with Prof. Craig Hawker.

Research Group: 

Research in the E. Seo group is focused on designing, synthesizing, and characterizing soft polymeric and hybrid materials at the interface of polymer chemistry, additive manufacturing, self-assembly, and nanotechnology. We strive to establish structure-property relationships and develop sustainable polymeric materials from stimuli-responsive macromolecular and nanostructures.

Currently, our projects are split into 3 subgroups:

  1. Polymer networks with stimuli-responsive nanoparticles as crosslinks
  2. 3D photopolymerization of chemically reprocessable materials
  3. Advanced, hierarchical materials spanning multi-length scale using self-assembly
