Biography:

B. William Silcock is an associate professor at the Cronkite School and a leading global innovator in journalism education.

He also is the curator of the U.S. State Department’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fulbright Fellowship program at ASU and the director of Cronkite Global Initiatives, where he fosters faculty exchanges and manages undergraduate study abroad programs.

A journalism scholar with more than 25 peer reviewed academic articles, Silcock was twice selected as a Fulbright Scholar (Ireland, 1992, Sweden, 1997).

He received his doctorate in 2001 from Missouri (global news theory), his master’s in 1989 from Brigham Young University (local TV news ethics) and his bachelor’s in communications from BYU. His most recent scholarly article (2015) focuses on visual gatekeeping. He has published on war coverage, framing theory and TV newsroom gatekeeping routines.

His book that he co-authored, “News Now: Visual Storytelling in the Digital Age” (2011), is gaining wide adoption as a digital media textbook. With a passion for international broadcast news, “Dr. Bill” as he is known around the halls of the Cronkite School, trains journalists globally — most recently in Croatia (2016), Pakistan (2015) Serbia (2015), Sri Lanka (2011), Jordan (2011), and Kyrgyzstan (2010) for the U.S. State Department and private companies.

He has conducted more than 50 workshops in the last decade for journalists on such topics as leadership, news, social media and ethics. An author, gifted teacher and academic leader, Silcock builds bridges across cultures having taught and mentored nearly 50 Fulbright Humphrey fellows over the past fives years.

Experienced in political coverage as a TV producer and anchor, Silcock’s award-winning documentary, “Backstage at a Presidential Debate: the Press, the Pundits and the People” aired on PBS stations, won a 2004 juried faculty Award of Excellence from the Broadcast Education Association and the Houston International Film Festival's Gold Award of Excellence.

A former TV anchor/producer, Silcock, worked for eight years as the managing editor news at KOMU-TV (NBC) in Columbia, Mo., while a faculty member at the Missouri School of Journalism. At Missouri, Silcock led the RTDNA management seminar for news executives.

Silcock began his adventure into the academy as the news and public affairs director of KBYU-TV (PBS) in Salt Lake City/Provo, Utah. A senior producer at KTVX (ABC) in Salt Lake City, he also anchored weekend newscasts and daily prime-time news magazines in Boise, Idaho, at KIVI (ABC) and in Myrtle Beach/Florence, S.C., at WPDE (ABC).

His radio career included stints at KSL in Salt Lake City, States News Service in Washington, D.C., and AP Radio and UPI Audio in New York.
