Professor Powers is the editor of Review of Research in Education, and a fellow of the National Education Policy Center (NEPC). She and Margarita Pivovarova are using the U.S. PISA data to analyze the relationship between the context of reception and the acaddemic achievement of immigrant students. They are also using administrative data analyze teacher retention and attrition patterns in Arizona over the last five years focusing on the differences in employment outcomes for charter school and traditional public school teachers.

Education:

Ph.D. Sociology, University of California-San Diego

Research Interests:

Guiding Research Questions:

  • What are the equity implications of educational policies such as school choice?

Current Research Projects:

  • I am using multiple years of PISA data to analyze the school contexts of immigrant students and the relationship between school characteristics and achievement gaps between immigrant and native-born students (with Margarita Pivovarova).
  • I am using administrative data to analyze teacher retention and attrition patterns in Arizona over the last five years (with Margarita Pivovarova) to provide policy-relevant recommendations for addressing the teacher shortage in Arizona.
  • Other ongoing projects examine the social construction of teachers using newspaper articles covering controversial issues related to teachers' employment, and historical and contemporary aspects of school segregation.  I also continue to conduct research on different aspects of school choice.
