Biography

Associate Professor Mary Fitzgerald has been active as a performer, choreographer, and educator since 1984.  She was a member of Kei Takei’s Moving Earth for nearly ten years, performing and teaching internationally.  Professor Fitzgerald also has danced with A Ludwig Dance Theatre, Fred Darsow Dance, and several independent choreographers throughout the United States.  She has been a guest artist for numerous professional companies and dance programs in the U.S., Europe, Japan, China, Mexico, India, and Colombia.  Her choreography has received funding from the Ministry of Culture in Mexico, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.  Ms. Fitzgerald is a winner of the 2005 Arizona Choreography Competition, and received an Artist Project Grant from the Arizona Arts Commission in 2006.

As faculty member at ASU, Ms. Fitzgerald’s research and teaching focuses on contemporary movement practices, choreography, and socially engaged arts. She has received two Distinguished Teaching Awards from the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts, several mentorship awards, and an ASU Professor of the Year nomination in 2010 and 2013.   From 1998-2007, she co-directed Dance Arizona Repertory Theatre (DART), the student community dance company in the School of Dance, with her colleague, Jennifer Tsukayama.   DART’s program excellence was recognized with funding from Dance/USA, ASU/Motorola, Arizona Commission on the Arts, Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and Target.   The company received the President’s Award for Social Embeddedness in 2004, and for a second time in 2007 as a partner to the ASU Art Museum.   In collaboration with local artists and ASU faculty, Ms. Fitzgerald continues to engage in youth projects funded by ArtSpace and the National Endowment of the Arts.

Research Interests

  • Contemporary modern dance choreography and new media
  • Socially Engaged Arts
  • Somatic Practices

As a choreographer and somatics practitioner, Professor Fitzgerald has a keen interest in dance and new media and science/art collaborations.  In addition to creating intimate human portraits using the mediums of film and live choreography, she has collaborated with other artists and scientists on performance projects related to sensory experiences, neuroscience, and sustainability.  These have been presented in a range of venues, from conventional theatres to outdoor spaces.  Professor Fitzgerald also frequently joins forces with faculty from the School of Music on large ensemble dance and music events that have featured the works of new music composers Glenn Hackbarth, Wendy Mae Chambers, Iannis Xenakis and John Cage.

In addition to choreography, Professor Fitzgerald's research agenda centers on socially engaged arts.  Since 1998 she has been involved in partnerships with numerous youth organizations in the Phoenix area, including the Silvestre Herrera School, the Boys and Girls Club of the East Valley, the Pappas School, the Youth Development Institute, and South Mountain High School.  She has published several articles and a book chapter about socially engaged practices, issues related to dance and human rights, and the history of community dance in the United States.
