Sherry Cisler is a Teaching Professor (MY) for the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies in ASU’s New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. Cisler received her M.A. in Literature and Writing Studies from California State University, San Marcos with an emphasis in Rhetorical Theory, American and Multicultural Literatures. As such, her interests lead her to teach a variety of composition and literature courses since having joined the ASU faculty in 2000.
A primary objective of Cisler’s approach to upper and lower division writing is to encourage her students to be more directly interactive with their writing and within their communities. As such, she frequently invites local, statewide and national speakers to discuss a variety of controversial issues with her students, providing an array of perspectives and experiences. This approach led her to create two specifically theme-based composition courses, English 101 and 102 PAWS, Preservation of Animal Welfare and Species, along with pursuing statewide and national issues current within a given semester. In all, such involvement has provided a rewarding opportunity to approach both the teaching and practice of writing from unique, interesting and timely perspectives.
Cisler also teaches a variety of literature courses, including American Literatures, Multicultural Autobiography, American Southwest in Literature and Film, American Novel, Short Story, Gender and Literature, and World Literatures. Her background and passion for histories, narratives, cultures and literatures inspire her teaching and continued scholarship in these areas.
Cisler has twiced served as the Interim Director for ASU’s First Year Composition Program, a representative for the ASU West campus for the ASU Writing Program Administrators Council, the Provost Advisory Board, the committee for ASU's Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, is a member of the Barrett Honors College Faculty, and since 2015, serves on the University Hearing Board.
