Biography

Dr. Erin K. Chiou is Assistant Professor of Human Systems Engineering in The Polytechnic School, part of The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, and director of the Automation Design Advancing People and Technology (ADAPT) Laboratory.

Dr. Chiou received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, concentrating in Human Factors and Ergonomics with a minor in Health Systems. During this time, she was supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the Graduate Engineering Research Scholars fellowship.

Prior to earning her graduate degrees, Dr. Chiou worked in a variety of industries, including with the Human Factors and Industrial Design group at Baxter Healthcare (now Baxter International), and at an education startup company in Shanghai, China. She received her B.S. in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she conducted research with the Culture and Emotion Lab in the Department of  Psychology, and with the Language Production Lab of the Beckman Institute. From 2006-2007, she was a Freeman scholar exchange student at Fudan University. 

Dr. Chiou currently teaches PSY 560/HSE 424 Human Automation Interaction and HSE 598 Data Analytics.

 

Research Interests

Human-automation interaction, trust in automation, human-agent cooperation in complex systems, resilience engineering, health systems engineering, healthcare human factors, and medical devices
