Biography

Prior to his appointment at ASU, Roger Mantie (PhD, University of Toronto; MM, Brandon University) was an assistant professor at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts. Prior to that, Roger taught instrumental music in Manitoba schools, performed professionally as both a jazz and classical saxophonist, directed jazz ensembles at Brandon University and the University of Manitoba, directed the Royal Conservatory of Music Community School Jazz Ensemble in Toronto, and conducted the all-campus Hart House Symphonic Band at the University of Toronto.

These days Roger’s professional work centers on the ways in which education and schooling affect individual and collective well-being. Toward this end he has been at the forefront of promoting lifelong music making as an integral part of healthy living, encouraging the profession to make stronger connections between school music, the community, and musical engagement beyond the school years.
