Biography

Gustavo E. Fischman is a professor of educational policy and director of edXchange the knowledge mobilization initiative at the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. He advocates the need for educational research to be considered as a public good and focuses his work on understanding and improving the processes of knowledge production and exchange between scholars, educators, activists, practitioners, administrators, media workers, policymakers, and the broad public. The main goal of Fischman's professional agenda is to promote more engaging, responsive and usable educational research oriented to the elimination of educational and social inequalities. He has written more than 100 academic publications as well as numerous commentaries and interviews. Fischman has served as a visiting scholar in several graduate programs in Europe and Latin America and was elected a fellow of the International Academy of Education in 2013, and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association in 2015. He serves on numerous editorial boards and is the editor of Education Review. Fischman's current research project "For whom and to what end is educational research ultimately directed?"  explores the strategies implemented by colleges of education at research-intensive universities to make their scholarly production accessible, understandable and usable by practitioners, policymakers, journalists and the public at large.

Research Interests

Guiding Research Questions:

  • How research in education is used by scholars, educators, journalists, policy-makers and the public?
  • How Global Learning Metrics are used to frame, and influence educational policies?

Current Research Projects:

Fischman's main current research project “For whom and to what end is educational research ultimately directed?”  explores the strategies implemented by colleges of education at research intensive universities to make their scholarly production accessible, understandable and usable by practitioners, policymakers, journalists and the public at large.

His second project examining to what extent ministries of education, policymakers, and other relevant social actors value and use international measures of student attainment.  This project includes an informational survey of approximately 40 GLM “experts,” and  a pilot survey targeting 100+ Global Learning Metrics stakeholders.  The culminating report will offer insights into how GLM “users” perceive, frame, and influence these metrics in their own policy and research work.
