Biography

Maria Ocando Finol is a Spanish Linguistics PhD student at ASU, where she is also a graduate teaching associate, specializing in second language acquisition, computer-assisted language learning, and literary translation. Her research focuses on the development of intercultural competence in the second language classroom, in particular through the use of film as an anxiety-free zone, and on film annotation and its relation to the development of digital literacies. She has also conducted research on subject pronoun expression in the voseante variety of Maracaibo Spanish. Maria is currently a research assistant for the Humanities Lab at ASU, where she contributes to an ethnographic study on cross-generational, collaborative research groups within interdisciplinary health humanities curricula addressing social challenges. She is an MLA/Mellon Connected Academics Scholar (2015), and has received recognitions within ASU such as GPSA's Teaching Excellence Award (2016-2017), and SILC's Chasqui Award (2017). 

Education

Received a BA in Education in Modern Languages (2010) and BA in Journalism (2010).

Currently pursuing the Computer-assisted language learning certificate at ASU, as well as the Literary Translation certificate.
