Biography

Lisa B. Spanierman is Professor and Faculty Head in Counseling and Counseling Psychology. She is Faculty Research Affiliate at the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC), where she investigates mental health disparities. She earned her PhD at the University of Missouri and Master's degrees at Columbia University. Dr. Spanierman has been recognized by the American Psychological Association's Society of Counseling Psychology with the Kuder Early Career Award, and as of 2014, she is Fellow of the American Psychological Association. She has received several teaching awards, including the University of Illinois Provost’s Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching. Currently, she serves as associate editor of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.

Research Interests

Dr. Spanierman's research focuses primarily on white individuals’ racial attitudes, including emotional responses to racism. In December 2014, she co-edited Unveiling Whiteness in the 21st Century: Global Manifestations, Transdisciplinary Interventions  (with Watson & Howard-Wagner, Lexington Books). Additionally, Dr. Spanierman conducts research on racial microaggressions that target students of color. She has published several microaggressions articles with students from the McGill Diversity and Equity Research Lab. Current projects at ASU investigate attitudes toward undocumented immigrants in higher education and mental health practitioners’ cultural competence in clinical settings.
