Biography

I grew up in Connecticut, raised by a father who was a college textbook editor and a mother who made more money cleaning houses than she could in any other pink collar job.  I went to the New College of Florida where I earned a BA (1989) in Political Science; my honors thesis was on whistleblowing about organizational wrongdoing. After working for a couple of years at a community mental health clinic, I earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School, Syracuse University (1992); one of my criteria in choosing the program was that I would not have to write another thesis.  After working a couple of more years as a Presidential Management Fellow at the US Department of Health and Human Services, I  earned a MA (1997) and Ph.D. (1999) in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  My master's thesis examined determinants of American women's marital timing, and my dissertation demonstrated gender differences in peer effects on adolescent binge drinking.   I have held academic appointments at Oglethorpe University (1999-2001), Georgia Institute of Technology (2002-2006), and the University of Georgia (2006-2013).  I love to travel near and far, have too many pets, and consider no day complete without reading fiction.

Research Interests

The short version is that my research focuses on the training, distribution, and migration of scientists and engineers in the global knowledge system.  I have a particular interest in the US science system and its relationship to other science systems.   Within this US system, I am interested in how policies and practices affect scientific career development, with a particular focus on differences by race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status and national origin.

To elaborate, s ocial dimensions of health and illness are inextricably linked to social stratification in educational and scientific systems; these systems reflect social, economic, political and cultural processes of great complexity.  National and international policies to reduce disparities in health outcomes include attention to diversification of the workforce.  This diversification includes attention to multiple bases of diversity in a population, with the general idea that a nation’s health and scientific workforce should mirror its population for maximum effect.  At the tertiary level, scientific education is a necessary condition for entry into careers in health, engineering, technology and science.  Inequities in access to education and its benefits create systems of stratification in which some groups benefit differentially.  These systems of inequality operate within nations and among nations in a global migration system of the highly educated.    Since higher education and immigration are by definition creatures of national government policies, national and supra-national policies attempt to address these inequities.  Therefore, I am interested in how policies affect entry, persistence, and success in science.
