Biography:

Jere T. Humphreys, an internationally known researcher and professor of music at Arizona State University (ASU), has enjoyed an extensive and varied career as a lecturer, presenter, researcher, and consultant in 31 countries on six continents and in 40 U.S. states. He is a Fulbright Senior Scholar (Macedonia 2002) and Fulbright Senior Specialist (Egypt 2010, Turkey 2015), and he was an Academic Specialist for the U.S. Information Agency (Department of State). He has presented 18 keynote and other major speeches worldwide. His prolific scholarship has resulted in more than 175 publications and translations in nine languages, including chapters and articles in books and journals, the Grove Dictionary of American Music, and Sage Directions in Educational Psychology--a republication of works by leading scholars in educational psychology and measurement (e.g., Bruner, Cronbach, Glaser, Nunnally, Piaget, Rogers, Stanley, Robert Thorndike). Among the numerous other books to which he has contributed, Humphreys authored a chapter on music in compulsory schooling in the U.S. for a book published under the aegis of the International Society for Music Education. Comprised of 18 chapters on as many countries, the book is published in two English editions and in one Mandarin edition by the prestigious Peking University Press. He has received three research awards from the National Association for Music Education: an MENC Citation of Excellence in Research (1985), a Distinguished Service Award “for exceptional contributions to scholarship” from the MENC History Special Research Interest Group (2010), and the MENC Senior Researcher Award (2006), the highest award for lifetime research achievement in the field of music education. Proficient in humanities and social sciences research methods, he is a versatile, frequently cited researcher who investigates a wide array of topics in music education and arts business.

His corpus of editorial work includes membership on the Senior Editorial Board and service as the contributing editor for music education for the second edition (print and online) of the Grove Dictionary of American Music (Oxford University Press), a component of the world's leading music encyclopedia. Humphreys commissioned and oversaw the writing, revising, and editing of approximately 350 articles related to music education and music therapy. He was also a section editor and author for the Oxford Handbook of Music Education (2012 and 2018 editions). His editorial work also includes service as editor of the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, a journal he “internationalized” in name, scope, and leadership; and membership on the editorial committees of 16 national and international education, music education, and music therapy research journals. His service to scholarship has also included collaboration with the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts and the Morrison Institute for Public Policy (consultant); European Union, Greek Ministry of Education, and U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities (research team membership); and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the U.S. Fulbright Specialist Program, World Learning (reviewer).

In the realm of teaching, highlights include residential graduate courses as a visiting professor at Northern Illinois University, the University of South Florida, and the University of Michigan; an endowed chair residency at the University of Alabama; and residencies at universities outside the United States in Argentina, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. During his stint as an academic specialist in Eastern Europe, he taught applied survey research and statistics to arts managers (e.g., of a symphony orchestra, opera company, theater company, museum, radio station) to help facilitate their transition from communism/socialism to partial self-supporting status. He served for more than a decade as an instructor and dissertation advisor in the D.M.A. in music education program at Boston University, and he played similar roles in the Native American Educational Leadership Ed.D. program in the ASU College of Education. Worldwide, he has been a dissertation and thesis advisor, committee member, and external reviewer for institutions in Australia, Eastern and Western Europe, and North and South America. Altogether, he has advised 45 doctoral dissertations, two master’s theses, and one undergraduate honors thesis, including several that received university or national recognition, and sat on dozens of other thesis and dissertation committees. He has been nominated (by students) for ASU Parents Association Professor of the Year, (by colleagues) for ASU Faculty Women's Association Distinguished Mentor of Women, and (by colleagues) for ASU College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teacher of the Year. He is a faculty honors advisor for the ASU Barrett, The Honors College and a faculty affiliate in the ASU Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies.

His university service has included co-founding, co-funding, and administering the William S. English Memorial Scholarship to honor his ASU predecessor and friend, and he has been the faculty advisor for the ASU Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter for over two decades. At West Virginia University and ASU, he chaired numerous search and personnel committees, and also served terms as chair of the music education areas. At ASU, he sat on the University Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee and the University Governance Grievance Committee and chaired the University Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure.

His professional service beyond ASU has included work as a university accreditation evaluator in Canada, and he has held leadership positions in the College Music Society (Advisory Committee for Music Education), Fulbright Association Arizona Chapter (Board of Directors member and Co-President), Greek Society for Music Education (Scientific Advisor), International Society for Music Education (Financial Advisory Committee), National Association for Music Education (Hall of Fame Board, Executive Committee for Society for Research in Music Education, Executive Committee for Society for Music Teacher Education, National Chair for History Special Research Interest Group, Chair for MENC Centennial History Symposium), University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance Alumni Society (Board of Governors), and others.

Outside of academia, Humphreys sat for eight years on boards of directors for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, where he specialized in board personnel matters as vice-president for nominating and governance, vice-president for personnel, chair of the Bylaws Committee, and member of the Board Executive Committee. As a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity (HFH) since 1998, he has served as a construction house/block (co)leader for 43 builds with HFH Central Arizona, Blitz Home Builders, and Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Projects (including a rehabilitation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina leading a team of 30 volunteers in Gulfport, Mississippi). At Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona (Phoenix), he has recruited and trained over a dozen volunteer house leaders and countless team leaders. He has also participated in dozens of other HFH projects, including a Global Village build in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Beginning in 2002, he collaborated with HFH International founding president Millard Fuller to found HFH Macedonia, an award-winning affiliate that to date has assisted more than 10,000 families. In 2014, HFH Macedonia awarded Humphreys the Curiste R. Macedonia XIV c. Medallion for service and dedicated its first new building to him, six condominiums in the old industrial city of Veles, Macedonia. He continues as an honorary (fundraising) member of the Board of Directors. In 2018, he received a Spirit of Philanthropy Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals---Greater Arizona Chapter for his work with Habitat for Humanity. Humphreys continues as a political activist in the Phoenix area, with special interest in civil liberties issues.

Humphreys grew up on his family’s cotton farm near Memphis, Tennessee, and became a first-generation college student when he matriculated at the University of Mississippi. After earning a B.M. in music education, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard; taught in the Mississippi public schools; soloed with high school and community bands; toured Europe during the American Bicentennial as assistant director and clarinet soloist with the 80-member U.S.A. Band (selected high school students); taught band, music theory, and futuristics in the Georgia Governors Honors Program; and was a union woodwinds performer in Mississippi and Alabama. Along the way, he earned an M.M. in clarinet performance at Florida State University, where his major teachers were Harry Schmidt (clarinet) and Clifford Madsen (music education). Next, he taught at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, completed a Ph.D. in music education at the University of Michigan, and taught for six years at West Virginia University. At the University of Michigan, he studied music and music education history with Allen Britton and Richard Crawford, and music education with James Froseth and Paul Lehman. He also studied social science research and statistics at the renowned Institute for Social Research.
