Biography

Jagannathan Rajagopalan is an associate professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy at Arizona State University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in 2004 and his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2009. In his doctoral thesis, he studied the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals using MEMS-based micro devices. From 2009 to 2011, he was a postdoctoral scholar at UIUC. His postdoctoral work focused on understanding the mechanics of neurons using novel Bio-MEMS force sensors and creating soft, functional biohybrid structures. Rajagopalan was a recipient of the Mavis Memorial Fellowship at UIUC in 2007. His research interests include the mechanics of nanoscale materials, cells and biological systems and understanding the synthesis-structure-property relationships of nanocrystalline metals and alloys for optimization of the microstructure of nanocrystalline materials to enhance their mechanical properties and functionality. His work has been published in Science, Nature Communications, Biophysical Journal and Acta Materialia, among others.
