Biography

Jagannathan Rajagopalan received his B. Tech. and M. Tech. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in 2004 and his Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2009. In his doctoral thesis, he studied the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals using MEMS based micro devices. From 2009 to 2011 he was a post doctoral scholar at UIUC. His post doctoral work focused on understanding the mechanics of neurons using novel Bio-MEMS force sensors and creating soft, functional biohybrid structures. Jagannathan was a recipient of the Mavis memorial fellowship at UIUC in 2007. His research has resulted in several publications, including those in Science, Nature Communications, Biophysical Journal and Acta Materialia.

Research Interests

Synthesis of nanocrystalline materials with tailored microstructures, Mechanics of nanostructured metal and alloy films, MEMS for in situ materials testing, Polymer based micro devices for cell mechanics and biohybrid platforms
