Nico Franz studies systematics and evolutionary history of weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) — a highly diverse lineage of plant feeding beetles estimated to include some 220,000 species worldwide. His field- and collection-based systematics research focuses on Neotropical and Sonoran species groups. He tweets @taxonbytes.
Franz is also a leading proponent of the taxonomic concept approach — a novel, logic-enabled method that organizes taxonomic names explicitly in relation to their knowledge context, leading to a computer-processable system for tracking changes among classifications and phylogenies. With Edward Gilbert as lead developer, Franz is an academic leader of the popular Symbiota software platform for biocollections data.
At ASU, he is the Curator of the Hasbrouck Insect Collection, and Director of the Biodiversity Knowledge Integration Center (BioKIC) and Biocollections. He also serves as principal investigator of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Biorepository at ASU.
Prior to joining the School of Life Sciences, Franz was a postdoctoral researcher in biodiversity informatics at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, and assistant professor at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayagüez.

My research focuses on insect systematics, evolution, and historical biogeography, with an emphasis on weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) of the New World region. I am also interested in the theory and practice of systematics and biodiversity data science; and specifically in the development of logic-based representations for phenotypic traits and for phylogenetic, classificatory ambiguity, conflict, and change. I am enthusiastic about promoting natural history collections stewardship for broad research and educational purposes including ecological monitoring and forecasting.
