Biography: 

Saule Moldabekova is senior lecturer in School of International Letters and Cultures. She is Barrett Honors College faculty member and Melikian Center affiliate. Moldabekova has been teaching Russian language and culture at Arizona State University since 2007. She developed and implemented two new courses: Russian Mass Media and Russian for Heritage Speakers.

Her previous experience includes teaching at Thunderbird School of Global Management and at the Pedagogical Institute of Culture in Kazakhstan. She served as a consultant for the Institute of International Education (New York, USA) and IREX (Washington, D.C.), providing logistical support for Exxon Mobil Russian Scholars Program, and contributing as writer, reviewer and editor to the Corporate Sustainability Education Program for Russian universities.

She holds a master's degree and a doctorate in education from St.Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts in Russia. Moldabekova received an honorary doctorate in philology from the University of Miras in Kazakhstan. She was also selected as a finalist of the Edmund Muskie Program and thus spent the 1994-1995 academic year on a professional development program in library and information sciences at St.John's University in New York.

Her research interests include heritage and second language pedagogy, including theoretical and practical issues of teaching heritage language learners.

  • Provided pre-departure briefings on Kazakh and Russian languages and cultures, gender roles and statuses to the 1st Battalion 158th Infantry Regiment of the Arizona National Guard, as they trained to participate in the Steppe Eagle exercise in summer 2019.      
  • Provided the ASU tour in Russian for Kyrgyzstan Parliament Delegation (Open World program sponsored by the Congress of the U.S.)      
  • Member of the Search Committee for a Resident Director for CLI Russian Program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
